#1 White House Cookbook

#1 White House CookBook
This is one of the few cookbooks that I paid more than a couple of dollars for, I found it at a antique show and bargained them down to $20. It's also one of my older books, it was copyrighted in 1887 but mine is the 1909 issue so this starts off with a 100 year old book for the New Year, 2009.

It came with a bit of history as well, it's signed 7 different times by Miss Lottie Cardwell of Rockdale Tower, Ontario. She must have really treasured it. She adds "Her CookBook, 1910 age 20 years, Jan the 9, 1906". Later she becomes Mrs. Albert Anderson of Melville Sask. Her cooking skills probably paid off. Also on one of the front pages she notes there's a recipe for Head Cheese on page 154. It tells you to boil the forehead, ears and feet until the meat will almost drop from the bones. Then you chop and pour it into a strong muslin bag, press the bag flat with a heavy weight and serve cold or warmed up in vinegar, yum.

In the back, there are Health Suggestions. To treat "Leanness" they call for drinking lots of water, eating graham mush, baked sweet apples and cultivate jolly people and bathe daily. That sounds like a good New Years resolution for all of us! So here's Cookbook #1 White House CookBook, 619 pgs.
