#54 The Dave Nichol Cookbook

#54 The Dave Nichol Cookbook

Some of you may not know who Dave Nichol is, well he's the fellow who came up with the "President's Choice" or "PC" line of products for The Real Canadian Superstores. They are huge grocery stores up here that tend to overwhelm me. I usually loose focus and end up wandering aimlessly through the aisles. I do NOT save time like it says on the store front. Plus you have to bring your own bags or buy them and I think you still have to bag your own groceries, that's just way too much pressure.

Anyway back to Dave, he traveled the world searching for unique taste treats, then he would capture their essence in his store brand products for Superstore. If a product had a "PC" on the label you knew Dave liked it since he told us this over and over on his TV commercials from 1985 to 1993. The man was a marketing genius until he tried to market a beer named after himself. I guess no one wanted to drink a "Dave".

Anything Dave liked, he bottled or boxed up, they were known as a premium line of store brands. He came up with "Memories of Cedar Springs", Grandmother McGuigan's Sage and Onion Sauce. There were lots of "Memory" products and sauces in the line, over 28 I think. Memories of Kobe, the 2 minute Miracle Tamari Garlic Marinade and Memories of Ancient Damascus, Tangy Pomegranate Glaze and Sauce weren't bad. In all, he came up with over 1000 products and he was named "The man with the golden palate." I guess they hadn't tried his beer. I do like the Thai inspired frozen TV dinners too but it's just too much work to go in there and find them. Cookbook #54 is
The Dave Nichol Cookbook.

  1. Nice article and book cover!
I don't like this store at all. I like some PC products though, they seem to have good quality. But the way things are organized in the aisles and shelves, way too unusual. At least for us Brazilians-recently-landed-in-Canada. You really spend too much time in there. And then: NO LIVING SOUL of the staff to answer your question in case you need something. The day we bumped into a lady who was a kind of manager there and asked for stuff for sushi she said: "you lost me on that one, I don't like sushi, sorry". Well: must emplyoyees only know where things are that they personally like? Never seen this before, stunning! :-)Cheers
